Blue Beetle streaming release
“Blue Beetle” was originally planned to be released for streaming on HBO Max (now known as Max), but plans changed and it was shown in theaters first.
However, it is now available to watch digitally starting September 26. You can stream “Blue Beetle” by renting it for $19.99 or purchasing it for $24.99 in 4K Ultra HD on Prime Video. If you’re not yet a Prime member, you can sign up for a free trial to access it.
The film tells the story of Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who discovers a mysterious artifact that turns him into the superhero Blue Beetle. “Blue Beetle” is a superhero film based on the DC character Jaime Reyes, also known as Blue Beetle. The film was made by DC Studios and The Safran Company, and was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), being the 14th installment.
The film was directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The main character, Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, is played by Xolo Maridueña. Other notable actors in the film include Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and George López.
The idea of a film starring Jaime Reyes began in November 2018, with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer as screenwriter. Ángel Manuel Soto was tapped to direct the film in February 2021, initially for HBO Max. Xolo Maridueña was chosen in August and the decision was subsequently made to release it in theaters in December.
Filming took place from late May to mid-July at various locations, including Wilder Studios in Decatur, Georgia, as well as El Paso, Texas, and Puerto Rico. The film premiered in El Paso on August 15, 2023, and was released in the United States on August 18, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
While the film received generally positive reviews, it did not perform well at the box office. It earned just under $125 million worldwide, less than its $104 million production budget, making it the lowest-grossing film in the DCEU.
Blue Beetle Plot
In the frozen land of Antarctica, a company called Kord Industries, led by its CEO Victoria Kord, discovers an ancient alien artifact called the Scarab.
Meanwhile, a young man named Jaime Reyes returns to his hometown, Palmera City, after finishing law school. He discovers that his family is having financial difficulties and is about to lose their home.
Jaime’s sister Milagro helps him get a job at Victoria’s mansion, but they are both fired after Jaime intervenes in an argument between Victoria and her niece Jenny. Jenny tells Jaime to meet her the next day at Kord Tower to look at a possible job opportunity.
The next day, Jenny realizes that Victoria is misusing the Scarab for her dangerous projects. She manages to get the Scarab and passes it to Jaime hidden in a fast food box. When Jaime opens the box, Scarab fuses with him, transforming him into a powerful armored hero.
Jaime rescues Jenny from Victoria’s forces and discovers that the Scarab, named Khaji-Da, chose him as his host. With the help of family and friends, they confront Victoria and her bodyguard Carapax, who is enhanced with OMAC technology. Jaime accepts his role as the new Blue Beetle and fights Carapax, eventually forgiving him.
After a fierce battle, they defeat Victoria and expose her evil deeds. Jenny takes over Kord Industries and promises to help the Reyes family recover from their losses. In a tragic twist, Jaime’s father dies due to a heart attack.
In the end, the Reyes family receives the support of their community and begins to rebuild their lives. Jaime and Jenny grow closer and Jenny takes on the responsibility of restoring Kord’s legacy. A surprise revelation in a recording hints that Jenny’s father, Ted, might still be alive, setting the stage for future adventures.
