Following Mordred’s death, we watch the High King of Avalon, Uther (Eddie Marsan), banish Arthur (Iain De Caestecker) and select a new prince as a suitable heir. However, Merlin (Nathaniel Martello-White) had foreseen potential dangers in Arthur’s future and tried to persuade Uther to call him. Despite Merlin’s best efforts, Arthur had already accepted life in exile from him.
As Uther’s health deteriorated, Lady Morgan (Valene Kane) urged him to bring Arthur back for the sake of stable rule. Uther decided to safeguard Arthur’s return with the help of three protectors: Bishop Bedwin (Steven Elder), Owain (Daniel Ings) and Gundleus (Simon Merrells). To ensure Gundleus’ loyalty, he had to break ties with his uncle Gorfydd, a crucial step in forming an alliance with Queen Norwenna.
However, the deal was clouded by Gundleus’ dark past with Derfel (Stuart Campbell), which involved the massacre of Derfel’s family. Nimue (Ellie James) intervened to stop Derfel from attacking Gundleus, driven by his sense of duty over his personal happiness. As Nimue and Derfel suffered their emotional separation, Uther’s life came to an end, leaving him eager to face the judgment of the gods.
After Uther’s funeral, Derfel learned of Uther’s legendary victory at Caer Udarn, earning him the epithet “The Great Red Dragon”. The kingdom mourned Uther’s absence and longed for his leadership. Queen Norwenna returned to the prince but opposed the marriage to Gundleus. As impending doom loomed over Nimue, Gundleus arrived in Avalon with a façade of unity and holding the young prince. The kingdom was thrown into turmoil as Gundleus’s forces overwhelmed the locals. Nimue confronted Gundleus, but Derfel’s attempt to intervene knocked him unconscious. Evil creatures aligned with Gundleus subjected Nimue to excruciating torture, witnessed by an awakened Derfel. The horrors increased when they found themselves in a burning house, witnessing the merciless slaughter of the locals.
Returning to Avalon, Gundleus forced Queen Norwenna to plead for mercy before brutally killing her. He orchestrated a reign of terror, consolidated his rule, and made Ladwys (Tatjana Nardone) his queen. In the midst of the chaos, Derfel struggled to save Nimue, who was dealing with the aftermath of his trauma. Guided by memories of Merlin’s protection during her childhood, Derfel persisted in her efforts to rescue her from the abyss of her suffering.
