Summary of King of Winter season 1 episode 2

After Mordred’s death, we witnessed the high king of Avalon, Uther (Eddie Marsan), banish Arthur (Iain De Caestecker) and choose a new prince as a worthy heir. However, Merlin (Nathaniel Martello-White) sensed the future dangers that Arthur could bring and tried to convince Uther to call him. Despite Merlin’s best efforts, Arthur had accepted his new life in exile.

As Uther’s health deteriorates, Lady Morgan (Valene Kane) urges him to bring Arthur back to ensure good governance. Uther opts to protect Arthur with the help of three defenders: Bishop Bedwin (Steven Elder), Owain (Daniel Ings) and Gundleus (Simon Merrells). To ensure Gundleus’ loyalty, he must sever ties with his uncle Gorfydd, a crucial step in his potential alliance with Queen Norwenna.

However, Gundleus’ dark past with Derfel (Stuart Campbell), in which he massacred Derfel’s family, taints this arrangement. Nimue (Ellie James) stops Derfel from attacking Gundleus, driven by his sense of duty over his personal happiness. As Nimue and Derfel suffer in their emotional separation, Uther’s life comes to an end, leaving him anxious for the judgment of the gods.

After Uther’s funeral, Derfel learns of Uther’s legendary victory at Caer Udarn, earning him the nickname “The Great Red Dragon”. The kingdom mourns the absence of Uther and longs for his leadership. Queen Norwenna returns to the prince but opposes the marriage to Gundleus. As impending doom looms over Nimue, Gundleus arrives in Avalon with a facade of unity and supporting the young prince. Tragically, he mercilessly murders the baby, plunging the kingdom into chaos.

The kingdom was thrown into turmoil as Gundleus’s forces overpowered the locals. Nimue confronts Gundleus, but Derfel’s attempt to intervene ends up knocking him unconscious. Evil creatures aligned with Gundleus subject Nimue to excruciating torture, witnessed by the awakened Derfel. The horrors escalate when they find themselves in the middle of a burning house and witness the ruthless slaughter of the locals.

Returning to Avalon, Gundleus forces Queen Norwenna to plead for mercy before brutally killing her. Orchestrating a reign of terror, he solidifies his rule and makes Ladwys (Tatjana Nardone) his queen. In the midst of the chaos, Derfel struggles to save Nimue, who deals with the aftermath of his trauma. Guided by memories of Merlin’s protection during her childhood, Derfel persists in her efforts to rescue her from the abyss of her suffering.

Winter King Season 1 Episode 2 Finale Explained

In the aftermath of Gundleus’ horrific actions, Nimue’s connection to the gods seems to be shattered, leaving her adrift in a world without hope. Seeing the Otherworld as an escape from her anguish, Nimue’s intentions are thwarted by Derfel, who vehemently opposes her risking her life. In the midst of the chaos, Lady Morgan and other Avalon residents come over for shelter.

Among the new arrivals is a young woman cradling a clubfooted infant, a child sacrificed to ensure Prince Mordred’s safety. However, Gundleus realizes something shocking: the baby she killed was not the prince. Spurred on by this revelation, Gundleus leads his army into the group’s path, anticipating his route to Caer Cadarn.

Unexpectedly, Arthur appears on the scene, emerging as a beacon of hope against Gundleus’ malevolence. Gathering his forces, Arthur and his men quickly neutralize Gundleus’s soldiers, lighting up a ray of optimism for a safe kingdom.

As Gundleus persists in his assault on Avalon, a resistant group including Queen Norwenna, Derfel, and Nimue successfully escape the chaos. Sailing through forests and grasslands, they aspire to reach the capital city of Caer Cadarn and enlist the support of other lords. In the midst of their journey, a hidden truth is revealed: the supposedly deceased baby King Mordred is alive.

The clandestine plan stems from a couple who had recently given birth in Avalon. In response to King Uther’s plea, this couple vowed to protect Mordred in secret. Thus, when Gundleus demanded the return of the baby, he gave himself the surrogate child, hiding the real Mordred.

Although the survivors manage to escape, the pursuit of their target remains steadfast. Meanwhile, Gundleus recognizes the switch and sends his army to track down the survivors. Derfel, dealing with this perilous journey, is forced to make his first kill in the woods.

As Winter King episode 2 comes to a close, Gundleus corners the survivors and demands the baby. Refusing to relent, the group faces the imminent threat of annihilation from Gundleus’s army. However, an unexpected twist occurs when Arthur resurfaces on the ridge and launches an attack on Gundleus’s forces.

While Arthur’s return marks a pivotal moment, his motivation for making this decision remains veiled. Despite his determination not to return, Arthur’s change could have deeper implications. The fate of Mordred’s secret and the evil that unfolds in the prophecy remain enigmatic aspects, promising intrigue in the series that unfolds.
