Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is known for being a Japanese manga series written and developed by Koyoharu Gotouge. The story was published in a magazine called Weekly Shōnen Jump between the dates of February 2016 to May 2020. It was later divided into smaller parts and released as 23-part books. This series has been published in English by Viz Media and at the same time, it was also released on the Manga Plus platform by Shueisha.

It’s about a teenager named Tanjiro Kamado who wants to be a Demon Slayer. His family was murdered and his little sister, Nezuko, was turned into a demon. The anime series first aired in 2019. A sequel came out in 2020 and became the highest-grossing anime film in history. Then, a second season aired in 2021-2022. After that, there was a compilation movie in 2023, along with a third season. Another compilation film followed in 2024, and now a fourth season is coming in May 2024.

Demon Slayer Characters

1. Tanjiro Kamado

Starting from the first episode, we get to see a character named Tanjiro Kamado who was voiced in Japanese by Natsuki Hanae, and in English by a person named Zach Aguilar. Tanjiro’s entire life was turned upside down when a demon kills his family and turns his sister, Nezuko, into a demon. Driven by both love for his sister and anger toward the demons who harmed his family, Tanjiro decides to join the Demon Slayer Corps.

His goal is to hunt demons and, hopefully, find a method to transform his sister Nezuko back into a human. He begins to understand the real reality of life and decides to make an even more difficult decision to save her sister.

2. Nezuko Kamado

In the first episode of Demon Slayer, we meet Neuko, who had a really bad past losing her parents, who were killed by a demon when her brother was away. The sad thing about all this is that, although they didn’t kill her, they turned her into a demon. Before becoming a demon, Nezuko was shown as a very good and loving character.

But everything changed after she became a demon because she gained more strength and went in search of bloodlust. After becoming a demon, Nezuko cannot speak and sunlight hurts her, so she is often alone. But she clearly still cares about her brother throughout the series.

3. Zenitsu Agatsuma

In Demon Slayer, we can see that he was voiced in Japanese by Hiro Shimono and then only in the fourth episode, we can hear Aleks Le’s English voice. Here, Zenitsu Agatsuma is older than the character Tanjiro, but he is shown to have no bravery and often runs away when danger arises. But he’s not bad at fighting because he was taught by Jigoro Kuwajima.

Zenitsu’s appearance is shown with golden colored eyes, light skin, and yellow hair due to a lightning strike, which shows him as a young person and also matches his personality. Although some people may not like Zenitsu’s jokes, he still helps make the anime truly memorable.

4. Inosuke Hashibira

In the first episode of the anime we meet Inosuke Hashibira. He is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in Japanese and Bryce Papenbrook in English. Inosuke is a fighter who likes to jump into battles without thinking about it first. He is very good at fighting, but often gets into trouble because he believes that he is stronger than he is. This gets him into trouble, especially since he is always looking for a good fight.

Inosuke had a different upbringing: he was raised by wild boars. That’s why he wears a unique type of headdress. Due to his background, he finds it difficult to understand human feelings and customs. But as he spends more time with the Demon Slayer Corps, he begins to learn and change, becoming more like the people around him.

5. Kanao Tsuyuri

In the first episode of the anime we meet a character named Kanao. She is voiced by Reina Ueda in Japanese and Brianna Knickerbocker in English. Kanao has large, kind-looking pink eyes and thin black hair tied in a ponytail. Due to her difficult childhood, she keeps to herself, barely shows feelings, and doesn’t want to make decisions. However, as time passes, she begins to grow, although the anime does not show much of this change. Lately, she hasn’t been on screen much, she only appeared briefly in seasons 2 and 3.

6. Genya Shinazugawa

In the anime show, Genya is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese and Zeno Robinson in English. He appears in episode 4 and has a sad story: he saw her mother turn into a demon and kill her brothers, and then her brother Sanemi killed her. Genya can’t do breathing techniques, but he is a strong fighter who can take on demonic powers. At first, Genya’s short temper makes it difficult to be friends with him, especially at first. But as the story progresses, he begins to open up a little more, although he still gets angry with Tanjiro, especially during the Swordsmith Village part of the story.

7. Sanemi Shinazugawa

In the first episode, which is number 22, we meet a character named Sanemi. She is voiced by Tomokazu Seki in Japanese and Kaiji Tang in English. Sanemi is known as Wind Hashira, a strong character in the anime. As a child, she went through difficult times, which caused him to hide his feelings from her and keep people, even her brother Genya, away from her. This sad event made him hate demons very much and he is determined to fight them with all his strength.

Although Sanemi is one of the older characters in Demon Slayer, he is not always very adult. He can be quite stubborn, especially when someone questions his beliefs.

8. Giyu Tomioka

In the first episode of the anime we meet a character named Giyu. He doesn’t talk much and likes to keep his thoughts to himself. When he was younger, his sister saved him from a demon, but died doing so. When Giyu tried to tell the others what happened, they didn’t believe him and he felt alone. Now, Giyu is part of the Demon Slayer Corps and is respected by others. He may seem tough and distant, but deep down he is not as confident as he seems.

9. Shinobu Kocho

In the first episode, Shinobu Kocho is portrayed as a friendly and easy to talk to member of the Demon Slayer Corps. She is always smiling and likes to joke. But beneath her happy attitude, she hates demons because her sister, Kanae Kocho, died because of them. Although she seems nice, Shinobu can be very harsh and mean, especially when she fights or talks to enemies. She is good at using harsh words to defeat even the strongest enemies while still smiling.

10. Tengen Uzui

Tengen, who used to be Demon Slayer and is now known as Sound Hashira, has a sad story that begins in episode 21 of the anime. He grew up in a ninja family, where his father trained him harshly and tricked him into killing some of his brothers. Despite his difficult past, Tengen wants to be different from his father and generally tries to do the right thing. While investigating the Entertainment District, he worries about his wife’s safety and asks Aoi Kanzaki for help. However, he later realizes the danger posed by a powerful demon and decides to prioritize the safety of Tanjiro and his friends.
