“The Eminence in Shadow” is a Japanese light novel series written by Daisuke Aizawa and illustrated by Tōzai. The story, which belongs to genres such as dark fantasy, fantasy comedy, and isekai, began online serialization in May 2018 on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website. Enterbrain subsequently acquired the series in November 2018, publishing six volumes of the light novel so far.
The manga adaptation, illustrated by Anri Sakano, has been serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine since December 2018, with 12 volumes published to date. There is also a spin-off manga titled “Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! Shadow Gaiden”, written by Seta U, which ran from July 2019 to September 2023.
The anime television series, directed by Kazuya Nakanishi and produced by Nexus, aired from October 2022 to December 2023 and spanned 32 episodes over two seasons. The series follows the protagonist’s journey in a world of dark fantasy, magic and comedy. Additionally, a game titled “The Eminence in Shadow: Master of Garden” was released in November 2022 for iOS, Android, and Windows platforms.
The series has gained popularity and has been licensed in North America by Yen Press. In December 2023, an anime film titled “The Eminence in Shadow: Lost Echoes” was announced, indicating the continued expansion of the franchise.

Will there be a season 3 of Eminence in Shadow?

Eminence in the plot of shadows
“The Eminence in Shadow” follows the story of Minoru Kageno, a boy in modern-day Japan who dreams of becoming a mastermind who wields power from the shadows. However, after an unexpected accident and untimely death, he is reborn in a fantastical realm as Cid Kagenou. Here, he adopts a façade of mediocrity while secretly fueling his ambition to orchestrate power behind the scenes.
In his new life, Cid, now known as Shadow, encounters an elf girl named Alpha who is suffering from a mysterious illness. Using her knowledge, Cid successfully cures her and takes the opportunity to tell a story. He convinces Alpha that her world is under the control of the infamous Devil Cult and he, as leader of Shadow Garden, has the means to defeat them and restore peace.
As Cid navigates this fantasy world, Alpha joins Shadow Garden, unaware that Cid’s made-up power struggle is becoming a harsh reality. Operating under the alias Shadow, Cid finds himself entangled in political intrigue and magical conflict, fighting the very forces he initially intended to exist. The lines between fiction and reality blur as Cid, once a would-be mastermind, is challenged to lead Shadow Garden in the fight against genuine threats posed by the Devil Cult.
