Development of Our Flag Means Death began when creator and showrunner David Jenkins discovered the intriguing life of Stede Bonnet through his wife and Wikipedia. He was fascinated by the gaps in Bonnet’s story, such as why he left his family and why Blackbeard took him under his wing.
Jenkins envisioned the show focusing on the romantic relationship between Bonnet and Blackbeard, and Taika Waititi, who plays Blackbeard, joined the project after hearing the story. HBO Max gave the series a straight-to-series order in September 2020, with Jenkins, Basch and Halstead serving as executive producers, and Waititi executive producing and directing the first episode. The show was renewed for a second season in June 2022.
