Will There Be a Mummy 2 with Tom Cruise? The Fate of The Mummy Franchise

Will there be Mummy 2 with Tom Cruise?

At the moment there are no confirmed plans for the production of “The Mummy 2” starring Tom Cruise. The initial vision of creating a shared universe of classic movie monsters, including iconic characters like Frankenstein and Dracula, was abandoned due to the disappointing performance of the first film in the series. Despite the dedicated fan base and resurgence of interest in the franchise, no concrete announcements have been made regarding a sequel with Tom Cruise reprising his role.

However, the possibility of a revival or reboot of the franchise with a new set of actors remains a topic of speculation. The fate of The Mummy franchise is uncertain and it remains to be seen if it will be resurrected for a new generation of audiences. Of course, there are currently no plans for Mummy 2 with Tom Cruise, but fans of him can be ready for his next movie Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part 2, this Mission Impossible franchise never failed to satisfy its fans.

The Mummy (2017)

The Mummy is a 2017 American fantasy action-adventure film directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by a team including David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie and Dylan Kussman, with a story by Kurtzman, Jon Spaihts and Jenny Lumet. The film, which served as a reboot of the Mummy franchise, was part of Universal’s ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful Dark Universe project.

The film stars Tom Cruise in the lead role as US Army Sergeant Nick Morton, who inadvertently disturbs the ancient tomb of imprisoned Egyptian princess Ahmanet, played by Sofia Boutella. The cast also includes Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe.

The Mummy premiered at the State Theater in Sydney, Australia, on May 22, 2017, and was subsequently released in the United States on June 9, 2017. Despite high expectations, it received predominantly negative reviews from critics. While the film managed to gross $410 million worldwide, its performance was considered disappointing due to significant production and marketing costs.

In the end, the film suffered a substantial loss, estimated at around $95 million, leading to it being labeled a box office bomb. The film’s initial goal was to launch Dark Universe, an ambitious cinematic universe centered on the classic Universal Monsters series. However, the film’s disappointing box office results led to the Dark Universe project being discontinued and cancelled.

The Mummy Plot (2017)

In ancient Egypt, Princess Ahmanet is denied her rightful place as ruler when her father fathers a son. Seeking power, she makes a pact with the deity Set and murders her family, only to be captured and mummified alive as punishment. In the present day, U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton and archaeologist Jenny Halsey unearth Ahmanet’s tomb and inadvertently resurrect her. After a series of supernatural events, Nick discovers that he is cursed by Ahmanet, who seeks to use him as a vessel for Set.

As Ahmanet wreaks havoc, a secret society led by Dr. Henry Jekyll intervenes. Jekyll’s alter ego, Mr. Hyde, plans to use Nick as Set’s host. Nick and Jenny escape and confront Ahmanet, who summons an army of zombies and a massive sandstorm in London.

Nick resists Set’s possession, using the powers to extract Ahmanet’s life force and ultimately killing her. Nick says goodbye to Jenny and disappears, while Ahmanet is sealed again in her tomb. Nick resurrects his deceased comrade Chris and sets off on an adventure to Egypt to find a cure for the curse.

The Mummy’s Ending Explained

In the final scenes of “The Mummy,” Nick Morton, after a fierce battle with the resurrected Princess Ahmanet, manages to use the powers of Set, the deity Ahmanet had tried to free, to extract her life force and ultimately defeat her. Although Nick is initially overcome by Set’s possession, he regains control after remembering the words of Jenny and Dr. Henry Jekyll.

As Ahmanet is resealed in her tomb, Jenny and Jekyll wonder if Nick, now fused with Set, will wield his new powers forever. Nick, realizing that the secret society Prodigium is closing in on him, bids Jenny a heartfelt goodbye before disappearing. The final scene shows Nick in the desert, resurrecting his comrade Chris from him. The two set out on an adventure to Egypt, with the shared hope of finding a cure to rid Nick of the curse he acquired from Ahmanet’s ancient powers.
