“Goodfellas” is a 1990 film about the life of a man named Henry Hill and his involvement with the mafia. Directed by Martin Scorsese and based on the book “Wiseguy” by Nicholas Pileggi, it stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino. The film follows Henry Hill and his friends and family from 1955 to 1980, showing his rise and fall in the world of organized crime.

Originally titled “Wise Guy,” the film’s name was later changed to “Goodfellas.” To prepare for their roles, the actors often spoke with Nicholas Pileggi, who had research left after writing the book. According to Joe Pesci, a lot of improvisation occurred during rehearsals, where Scorsese gave the actors the freedom to do whatever they wanted. The best lines from these sessions were used in the final script.

“Goodfellas” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 1990 and earned Martin Scorsese the Silver Lion for Best Director. It was released in the United States later that year. The film was made with a budget of $25 million and grossed $47 million. It received widespread praise and was considered by critics to be one of the highlights of Scorsese’s career. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, with Joe Pesci winning Best Supporting Actor. It also won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

“Goodfellas” is often praised as one of the best films ever made, especially in the gangster genre. In 2000, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress. The film’s influence can be seen in other media due to its content and style.

Goodfellas Plot

The story begins in 1955, with a young man named Henry Hill fascinated by mafia life in his Brooklyn neighborhood. He begins working for local mafia boss Paulie Cicero, alongside Jimmy “the Gent” Conway, a gangster, and Tommy DeVito, a troublemaker like him. Henry starts with small crimes for Jimmy and works his way up.

In the 1960s, the trio spends their nights at the Copacabana nightclub, enjoying a glamorous lifestyle. Henry falls in love with Karen, a Jewish woman concerned about his criminal activities, but she marries him anyway. In 1970, Billy Batts, a made man, is brutally murdered, leading to unexpected consequences. Six months later, the body is relocated due to a development project.

In 1970, Tommy kills Spider, causing tension. Karen discovers Henry’s affair and threatens him. Later, they are arrested and Henry supports his family by dealing drugs in prison. Released in 1978, Henry expands his drug business with Jimmy and Tommy, but things get bleak. Jimmy stages a heist, but greed and police interference have brutal consequences.

In 1979, Tommy is murdered and, in 1980, Henry’s life turns upside down. Arrested for drug trafficking, he learns that Karen destroyed his stash. Facing financial ruin and suspecting danger, Henry decides to become an informant. He testifies against Paulie and Jimmy, enters witness protection and leaves his once exciting gangster life for a normal life, lamenting his fate as an average “idiot.”
