The series is set in the fictional town of Emmerdale, formerly known as Beckindale until 1994, situated in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales. Emmerdale was conceived by Kevin Laffan and made its initial debut on October 16, 1972.
From the beginning, interior scenes were filmed at Leeds Studios. The show’s exterior scenes were originally filmed in Arncliffe, Littondale, possibly inspired by Littondale’s former name, Amerdale. Filming later moved to Esholt before settling on a purpose-built set on the Harewood estate.
The series originally aired in the afternoon and was planned as a three-month television experiment. However, its success led to more episodes being produced and broadcast during the day until 1978, when it moved to an early afternoon prime time slot in most regions.
In the late 1980s, the show underwent significant changes under the direction of a new production team. These changes included a name change, more intense and dramatic storylines, and an increase in the number of episodes produced. Consequently, Emmerdale gained a larger audience and gained recognition as a prominent British soap opera.
