Coronation Street History
Coronation Street, a British soap opera, faced criticism in the 1990s for its lack of ethnic diversity. In 1992, the Broadcasting Standards Council criticized the programme’s depiction of a bygone era and the low representation of ethnic minorities. New characters were introduced, including the first non-white regular family in 1999, the Desai family. In 2000, the show celebrated its 40th anniversary, and in 2010, it became the world’s longest-running soap opera.
The 50th anniversary in 2010 was marked by a tragic tram accident. The program continued to evolve in the 2010s and 2020s, addressing social issues and adapting to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, ITV announced that Coronation Street would air permanently in three 60-minute episodes per week. From 1985 to 1988, Granada TV produced “The Brothers McGregor”, a comedy featuring characters who initially appeared in an episode of Coronation Street. Another spin-off company, “Albion Market”, was introduced in 1985 but lasted only one year.
These spin-offs allowed viewers to explore new adventures and characters beyond the familiar cobbles of Coronation Street.
