Survivor
Survivor is an American television show based on a global reality competition series, inspired by Sweden’s Robinson Expedition, which began in 1997. It debuted on May 31, 2000 on CBS, hosted by Jeff Probst, who also helps produce the show with Mark Burnett and its creator, Charlie Parsons.
The series drops strangers in a remote place where they must fend for themselves, finding food, fire and shelter. Contestants face challenges (physical tasks such as running and puzzles) to earn rewards and protect themselves from elimination. Contestants are eliminated until one person remains, called the “Sole Survivor”, who wins a grand prize of $1,000,000 ($2,000,000 in Winners at War).
Survivor has been a success. It was a highly rated show between 2000 and 2006, pioneering American reality television and earning critical acclaim. It received Emmy nominations and awards, including back-to-back wins for host Jeff Probst. Time magazine named it among the best television shows and TV Guide ranked it 39th among the best series in history.

Survivor rules
The first American season of Survivor was similar to the Swedish series. The contestants, divided into groups called “tribes”, lived in a remote location and relied on limited supplies for a set number of days. The challenges tested their physical and mental abilities for rewards or immunity, leading to elimination votes at Tribal Council.
As the game reached its midpoint, both tribes merged into one and individuals competed for immunity. After the merge, the eliminated players became the “jury.” As the game neared its end, a Final Tribal Council was held where the remaining players persuaded the jury to vote for them as the “Sole Survivor” to win a $1 million prize.
The US version introduced twists such as tribe changes, hidden immunity idols, and special powers, keeping the game dynamic and avoiding predictable strategies. The twists also allowed eliminated players a chance to return, enhancing the unpredictability of the show.
