Time Traveler, also known as Hologram Time Traveler, is an interactive movie arcade game created through the collaboration of Virtual Image Productions, Sega and GTE Interactive Media. Its launch occurred in 1991, under the Sega banner.

Set against the backdrop of the Old West, Time Traveler chronicles the journey of Marshal Gram as he traverses multiple timelines in a quest to rescue Princess Kyi-La and confront the malevolent time lord, Vulcor. What sets this game apart is the use of a distinct arcade cabinet that uses a large black spherical mirror along with a CRT television to project the game characters.

Time Traveler Gameplay

Time Traveler’s gameplay closely mirrors that of other laserdisc games, taking inspiration from titles such as Dragon’s Lair. Player interaction involves manipulating a joystick in specific directions or pressing buttons at crucial moments in the game. Executing the correct commands triggers movie clips showing character progression, while incorrect movement leads to unique death scenes, tailored for each segment. The game offers players a brief tutorial and provides hints for the game.

Player controls include a 4-way joystick, action button, and time reversal button; the latter is a distinctive feature that allows players to rewind and replay the previous seconds after a failed segment. This ingenious mechanic offers a second chance to evade impending death, avoiding the need to restart the entire full motion video (FMV) sequence. During intermissions between levels, players can replenish their supply of time reversal cubes by inserting additional coins into the arcade machine.

The game begins with three lives and a solitary time reversal cube, offering the possibility of approximately ten minutes of flawless gameplay. Game sequences occasionally introduce intentional latency, accompanied by a “time malfunction” display. Time Traveler is made up of seven distinct levels, each designated as a “time period.” Each level features random FMV sequences, woven into themed eras such as prehistoric, medieval, future, and Age of Magic.

As players progress through the game, they sporadically encounter a slot machine minigame known as “Hellgate.” Here, players can bet a life to compete for additional lives, get a free credit, or face the danger of losing the entire game.
