The Marvels Post-credits Scene Explained, How Many Post Credit Scenes in The Marvels?

the wonders

“The Marvels” is a superhero film released in 2023, based on characters from Marvel Comics. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and serves as a sequel to the 2019 film “Captain Marvel.” The film is directed by Nia DaCosta, who also co-wrote the script with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik.

The main characters of the film are Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson), aka Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (played by Iman Vellani), aka Ms. Marvel. The story revolves around these superheroes, who begin to swap places whenever they use their powers, leading them to form teams.

The film explores their adventures and the challenges they face as they join forces. The cast also includes Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh and Samuel L. Jackson.

Filming took place at various locations including Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, Los Angeles and Tropea, Italy. The title “The Marvels” refers to the three main characters and their similar abilities.

The film premiered in Las Vegas on November 7, 2023, and was released in the United States on November 10, 2023, as part of Phase Five of the MCU. However, despite its long-awaited release, “The Marvels” received mixed reviews from critics.

Marvels post-credits scene explained

At the end of “The Marvels,” Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, is seen closing a dangerous wormhole. This wormhole, opened by Dar-Benn, posed a threat to the fabric of space and time, causing a rupture in the space-time continuum. Monica, using powers charged by her teammates, closes the wormhole from the inside but becomes trapped in a different dimension.

The post-credits scene reveals where Monica ended up. She wakes up in a sterile lab bed and sees her presumed dead mother, Maria Rambeau, played by Lashana Lynch. In a touching moment, Monica realizes that she is in a different reality. This scene connects to an earlier moment in “Wandavision” where Monica returns from the Blip, only to discover that her mother has died of cancer.

During their conversation, a character known as Beast, a popular X-Men figure, explains the situation to Monica. Notably, Maria Rambeau in this alternate reality wears a red and white superhero costume, resembling the character Binary from Earth-616 in the Marvel comics. Binary is a variant of Carol Danvers.

For those not very familiar with Marvel, it may be a little difficult to identify this version of Maria Rambeau. The costume suggests links to Binary and hints at the introduction of X-Men characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Marvel boss Kevin Feige has previously mentioned the inclusion of Stewart and the revelation that Kamala Khan is a mutant. Beast’s appearance in this scene adds to the growing anticipation of the X-Men’s role in the future of the MCU.

How many post-credits scenes are there in The Marvels?

“The Marvels” has a post-credits scene. Normally Marvel movies have two, but this time there’s only one.

In this scene, Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, successfully prevents two realities from merging by creating a hole in the space-time continuum. However, she ends up stuck in the other reality. In the post-credits scene we find Monica lying on a bed, connected to monitors. To her surprise, her mother, Maria Rambeau, played by Lashana Lynch, is sitting next to her. This is puzzling because Maria is supposed to be dead (as shown in “WandaVision”) and she looks much younger than she did when she died.

An off-screen voice, revealed to be Dr. Hank McCoy, aka The Beast from X-Men, speaks to Monica. This version of The Beast, played by Kelsey Grammer, confirms that Monica is in the Fox X-Men reality, now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This is the first explicit confirmation of the X-Men’s existence in the MCU.

As Monica begs her mother to remember her, Maria stands up and the camera reveals her dressed in a red and white outfit. Marvel fans will recognize this as the costume of Binary, a character from the X-Men comics of the early ’80s. Before becoming Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was Binary, an intergalactic heroine with superpowers. In this universe, it appears that Maria has assumed the role of Binary and is unaware of her connection to Monica.

This post-credits scene not only hints at the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU, but also adds a layer of mystery with Maria’s transformation into Binary and her lack of recognition towards Monica.

The plot of wonders

The story begins with trouble among the Kree, a spacefaring species, as their home planet Hala faces civil war following the collapse of the Supreme Intelligence. This conflict leaves Hala sterile, losing air, water, and sunlight. Dar-Benn, the new Kree leader, uses a powerful artifact called Quantum Bands to create a spatial anomaly, attracting the attention of SWORD.

On the SABER space station, Nick Fury hosts peace talks between the Kree and Skrull empires. Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau are called in to investigate the anomaly. When Rambeau touches it, she, Danvers, and Kamala Khan switch places via teleportation, causing chaos as they fight each other’s enemies.

Discovering that their light-based powers are linked through quantum entanglement, the trio, informally called “the Wonders,” join forces. They learn that Dar-Benn’s actions threaten the stability of the jump point’s transportation network, endangering the universe.

Dar-Benn’s destructive plans involve draining Tarnax’s atmosphere and extracting water from Aladna’s ocean to Hala. The Marvels fight her, but she steals Kamala’s Quantum Gang to blast a hole in the multiverse. Kamala and Danvers team up to close the gap, leaving Rambeau stranded on the other side. Danvers sacrifices herself to restore Hala’s sun.

Inspired by their brief alliance, Kamala decides to form a new group of heroes, starting with Kate Bishop. In a mid-credits scene, Rambeau awakens in a parallel universe, greeted by an alternate version of her mother Maria and the mutant Hank McCoy.

Where to see the wonders

If the trend continues, the film could be available for digital purchase on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Vudu and iTunes around January 2024. It is then expected to stream on Disney+ approximately four months after its theatrical release, probably in February 2024. Keep an eye on these platforms to see the epic team-up of Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau.
