The Story of Long Shadow Season 1

“The Long Shadow” is inspired by Michael Bilton’s acclaimed book, “Wicked Beyond Belief,” and offers a compassionate portrait of those who crossed paths with Peter Sutcliffe, as well as the lasting impact on their families and survivors. The series also highlights disturbing parallels between the horrific crimes committed by the Yorkshire Ripper and more recent tragic events in history.

Between 1975 and 1980, Peter Sutcliffe spread fear across Yorkshire during a killing spree that claimed the lives of 13 women and left seven others lucky to escape his brutal attacks. These horrific crimes left an indelible mark on the nation’s collective psyche and have been the subject of numerous films and documentaries. However, the ongoing pain and grief experienced by the families of Sutcliffe’s victims is often overshadowed.

The series begins in October 1975 with the murder of Wilma McCann, a mother of four from Leeds. The first episode of this week’s series delves into the story of Sydney Jackson and his wife Emily, who would tragically become Sutcliffe’s second victim. Facing financial difficulties, like many during the economic challenges of that time, the Jacksons struggle with their circumstances. Emily makes the difficult decision to engage in sex work part-time to support her three children.

Initially, suspicion falls on Sydney as a possible culprit of his wife’s murder. However, as evidence emerges connecting the two murders, it marks the chilling beginning of a horrific killing spree.

As the series unfolds, Sutcliffe’s crimes trigger the largest police chase ever witnessed in Britain. However, many of the detectives involved harbor misogynistic attitudes that hinder the progress of the investigation. In particular, DCS Dennis Hoban (Toby Jones), recognizing the seriousness of the situation, approaches the case from its early stages.

Sutcliffe managed to evade capture for an extended period as police missed several opportunities. It wasn’t until 1981, when a routine police check discovered stolen license plates on his car, that he finally confessed to his heinous crimes.
