The Long Shadow Season 1 Trailer

The Plot of Long Shadow Season 1

“The Long Shadow” is inspired by Michael Bilton’s acclaimed book, “Wicked Beyond Belief,” and offers a sensitive portrait of the people who found Peter Sutcliffe, as well as their families and survivors. The series also sheds light on the disturbing parallels between the horrific crimes of the Yorkshire Ripper and the tragic events of more recent history.

Between 1975 and 1980, Peter Sutcliffe struck fear across Yorkshire during a killing spree that claimed the lives of 13 women and left seven others lucky to survive his brutal attacks. His heinous crimes left a lasting scar on the nation’s collective psyche and have been the focus of numerous films and documentaries. However, the ongoing pain and grief endured by the families of his victims is often overlooked.

Beginning in October 1975 with the murder of Leeds mother-of-four Wilma McCann, the first episode of this week’s series delves into the narrative of Sydney Jackson and his wife Emily, who would become Sutcliffe’s second victim. Like many struggling in the challenging economic climate of the time, the Jacksons faced financial difficulties, forcing Emily to make the difficult decision to pursue sex work part-time to support her three children.

Initially, the police suspect Sydney of being responsible for his wife’s murder until it becomes clear that the two murders are linked, marking the beginning of a horrific murder spree.

As the series unfolds, Sutcliffe’s crimes trigger the largest police chase ever witnessed in Britain. However, many of the detectives involved harbor misogynistic attitudes that make the investigation difficult. In particular, DCS Dennis Hoban (Toby Jones), who understands the seriousness of the situation, takes charge of the case from the beginning.

Sutcliffe managed to evade capture for an extended period as police missed several opportunities. It wasn’t until 1981, when a police check discovered stolen license plates on his car, that he finally confessed.
