Explanation of the irrational ending of episode 7
A lot happened in the seventh episode of “The Irrational.” Mercer, the soft-spoken investigator, planned a 24-hour date with Rose Dinshaw, where they could get to know each other better without getting too intimate too soon. They were also involved in a case over a Cézanne painting that could be a forgery.
The painting belonged to Blair, who was going through a divorce and had doubts about its authenticity. Henry Gibbs, the owner of the gallery, was suspected of having sold him a fake painting. When they asked Gibbs to reimburse Blair, he refused and suggested that Blair might be trying to scam him because of her divorce.
Meanwhile, Marisa was trying to reconnect with Kylie, but Kylie felt like Marisa wasn’t being honest about her feelings. They had a past and Kylie wanted Marisa to be more open.
As the episode unfolded, someone killed Gibbs, making the case even more complex. They suspected a shady client known as Mr. Z, but she turned out to be a woman who didn’t care if the paintings were fake, as long as they made money.
To solve the case, Mercer conducted an experiment with Phoebe and Rizwan to test the value of an ordinary item with and without a false story. Surprisingly, the sentimental value of an item often outweighed the fake story.
In the end, they discovered that Evan, who had a strong attachment to Bridgette’s forgeries, killed Gibbs because he could not bear the destruction of his paintings. The episode explored the theme of real versus fake, and Mercer and Rose became more open and real with each other.
The episode also hinted at the possibility that Marisa and Jace’s relationship might not work out, which could affect the church bombing case they were investigating. Mercer may not be part of the case, but Rose could help in future episodes.
