RuPauls Drag Race UK Season 5 Plot

“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 5 will maintain its established format, with ten new queens taking part in a mix of maxi and mini challenges as they compete for the prestigious title of winner. Throughout the season, viewers can look forward to the appearance from numerous guest judges including Yasmine Finney, Ellis-Bextor, Suranne Jones, Karen Hauer, Kristen McMenamy, Aisling Bea, Joel Domett, Edward Enninful, Cush Jumbo, Alexandra Burke and Daphne Guinness.

A long-awaited moment arrives with the addition of Carol Vorderman as a guest judge this season. The show’s format includes drag queens taking on mini-challenges, maxi-challenges and runway performances, all competing for the final prize of the season. Mini challenges test drag queens’ skills with time-bound tasks, while maxi challenges involve individual or group competitions that offer rewards, including immunity.

The runway challenge pushes queens to showcase outfits inspired by specific themes. When the new season begins, a new group of drag queens will make a grand entrance to the workroom, with RuPaul throwing in surprise challenges along the way. In the first episode, the judging panel will consist of Michelle Visage, Kristen McMenamy and Alan Carr, adding to the excitement and anticipation surrounding the season’s competition.

RuPauls Drag Race UK Season 5 Recap

Notably, this season doesn’t feature just six queens, which we’ve seen on occasion and which usually leads to a mediocre Snatch Game. The downside to a smaller cast is that any weak performances tend to stand out more, as there is less competition.

The editing during Snatch Game is faster and focuses on the best moments of each queen’s performance. During All Stars 7 I was convinced that having eight contestants was ideal for both rounds of Snatch Game. In the first round, the eight winners’ jokes were evenly distributed, demonstrating the potential for a balanced game. However, the second round was dominated by Judy Garland’s incredible performance of Jinkx Monsoon, proving that even in an eight-queen format, a featured artist can shine.

On the other hand, Drag Race UK seems to have settled on seven queens as its magic number. However, this has sometimes resulted in pacing issues that could be masked by a single outstanding performance in the past. Remember Ella Vaday’s portrayal of Nigella Lawson in season 3 or Bimini as Katie Price in season 2.

The problem is that without a standout main character, you end up spending more time on mediocre performances. This is why Snatch Game in Season 5 of the UK edition is somewhat disappointing, if not entirely disappointing.

The tour of Ru’s workshop offers an early clue that this won’t be a standout Snatch Game. Ru has faced criticism for pressuring the queens to change their characters in the past, especially in the UK edition. It is therefore commendable that he appears to have re-adopted this approach.

However, the challenge lies in not offering alternatives when you point out problems. For example, Cara Melle, a self-proclaimed Dionne Warwick superfan, struggles to name any of her songs beyond “That’s What Friends Are For.”
