Pantera expands its 2024 tour
After reuniting for their first tour in two decades earlier this year, Pantera have expanded their reunion plans to 2024. The band, comprised of surviving members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown, along with touring guitarist Zakk Wylde and the drummer Charlie Benante, will play 19 shows in North America with Lamb of God in February.
The tour, which features new headlining dates, will see Pantera visit several cities including Sunrise, FL; Tampa, FL; Lexington, Kentucky; and Nashville, Tennessee. This marks an exciting continuation of Pantera’s live performances, bringing their iconic sound to fans once again.
The expanded tour is not only a celebration of Pantera’s legacy but also an opportunity for fans to witness the band’s powerful live performances. The addition of new Canadian stops in Winnipeg, Toronto and Quebec City adds more excitement to the itinerary. Pantera is a famous heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, formed in 1981. The main members of the band were the Abbott brothers, Dimebag Darrell (guitarist) and Vinnie Paul (drummer). As the years went by, the band underwent lineup changes, eventually settling on Phil Anselmo as vocalist and Rex Brown as bassist. This formation, along with that of the Abbott brothers, is considered the most emblematic of the band.
Originally starting out as a glam metal band, Pantera changed their musical direction toward a heavier sound when Phil Anselmo joined in 1986. Their breakthrough came with the 1990 album “Cowboys from Hell,” which popularized the groove metal genre.
Pantera became one of the most successful and influential bands in heavy metal history, selling around 20 million records worldwide and earning four Grammy nominations. However, internal tensions arose within the band, leading to a hiatus in 2001 and eventually a breakup in 2003.
The band faced tragedy in 2004 when Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage during a concert. Despite the challenges, surviving members Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo reunited in 2022, and Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante joined as touring musicians, marking Pantera’s return to the stage after 22 years.

Panther Formation
Pantera was formed in 1981 in Arlington, Texas, by brothers Abbott, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. Initially a glam metal band, Pantera released three albums in the mid-1980s with lead vocalist Terry Glaze. Dissatisfied with his direction, the band sought a heavier sound and recruited Phil Anselmo as a new vocalist in 1986. This marked a significant change in Pantera’s musical style.
After landing a record deal with Atco in 1989, Pantera released their fifth album, “Cowboys from Hell”, in 1990. This album played a crucial role in popularizing the groove metal subgenre. Later albums such as “Vulgar Display of Power” (1992) and “Far Beyond Driven” (1994) further solidified Pantera’s place in the heavy metal scene.
However, internal tensions arose, particularly due to Anselmo’s health problems and personal struggles, leading to a strained relationship between the band members. This tension persisted for several years, resulting in a hiatus in 2001 and the band’s official split in 2003. The Abbott brothers formed Damageplan and Phil Anselmo pursued several side projects.
