At the end of episode 9 of Only Murders in the Building, Oliver realized that Donna had said the exact same words during the rehearsal that Maxine had criticized in her article about the play. This made Oliver suspect that Donna had read the article and might have tried to ruin the play because he didn’t believe Ben could do it.
Mabel then discovered that when Ben was talking to someone in his final moments, he was actually talking to himself. Ben was trying to follow a diet and Mabel believed that Donna had put a cookie in her room, knowing she might eat it. when she was upset. Mabel thought that Donna had mixed rat poison in that cookie and it worked because Ben fell into her trap.
They still needed more evidence to prove that Donna was the killer, but they had enough to tell Loretta to retract her confession. Then, Mabel, Oliver and Charles rushed to the courtroom and told Loretta that Dickie was not the killer and that they had another theory. But when they looked at the audience, they saw Donna sitting there.
She wanted Loretta to take the blame so the police wouldn’t come after her. Now, Loretta and her trio were in a difficult situation because Donna wasn’t going to give up easily. In the season finale, we’ll find out if Donna pays for her crime or if she finds a way to escape the law.
