“Nativity!” is a 2009 British Christmas film and is the first in a series of films about the Nativity. Directed by Debbie Isitt and released on November 27, 2009, the film stars Martin Freeman and Ashley Jensen. The story follows teacher Paul Maddens, played by Freeman, who tells a lie to his rival that Hollywood is coming to see his school’s Christmas play. But things get out of control and he has to fix the situation quickly.
The film, written by Debbie Isitt with some improvised parts, premiered on November 23, 2009 in Coventry, England. It hit cinemas on 27 November 2009 and then spawned sequels in 2012, 2014 and 2018. In 2017, a stage musical version was released and has since toured the UK during the Christmas seasons.
Nativity Plot
“Nativity!” It follows Paul Maddens, a teacher at St. Bernadette, who doesn’t like Christmas due to a past breakup. In charge of organizing the school’s birth play, he exaggerates to his rival, Gordon Shakespeare, about a Hollywood producer, Jennifer, who has turned his play into a film. The lie spreads and media attention grows.
Although St. Bernadette’s children lack Oakmoor’s talents, Paul and his dim-witted assistant, Mr. Poppy, create a unique and entertaining nativity scene. Paul, desperate to make the Hollywood story a reality, discovers that Jennifer is just a secretary. When the truth comes to light, the play is cancelled, putting Paul’s job in jeopardy.
Despite the setbacks, the children give a surprising performance, winning over the audience. Finally, a true Hollywood moment occurs, bringing Paul and Jennifer together. The film ends with them happily decorating for Christmas, showing that sometimes things turn out better than expected.
