Maroon 5, from Los Angeles, California, is an American pop-rock group. The group consists of lead vocalist Adam Levine, rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, lead guitarist James Valentine, drummer Matt Flynn, keyboardist PJ Morton, and multi-instrumentalist and bassist Sam Farrar. The band’s origins date back to 1994 when its original members, Levine, Carmichael, bassist Mickey Madden and drummer Ryan Dusick, came together as Kara’s Flowers during their high school years.
Following the release of his independent album “We Like Digging?” and a lukewarm reception, Maroon 5 signed a contract with Reprise Records. In 1997 they released “The Fourth World”. However, the album received a modest response, leading to the band’s departure from the record label.
Members subsequently shifted their focus to college. It wasn’t until 2001 that the group re-emerged as the Maroon 5, embracing a different musical direction and featuring guitarist James Valentine. They signed to Octone Records, an independent label with a joint venture relationship with J Records, and released their debut album, “Songs About Jane”, in June 2002.
Boosted by the success of singles such as “Harder to Breathe”, “This Love” and “She Will Be Loved”, the album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 chart and went quadruple platinum in 2005. That same year, Maroon 5 won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. In 2006, due to serious wrist and shoulder injuries, drummer Ryan Dusick left the band, making way for Matt Flynn as his replacement.

In 2010, PJ Morton auditioned to become Maroon 5’s touring keyboardist and backing vocalist, eventually becoming in official member. Morton’s role was expanded when he replaced Jesse Carmichael, who temporarily stopped performing with the group to focus on his studies, a role he reprized upon his return in 2014.
