Khruangbin is a musical trio from Houston, Texas, consisting of Laura Lee Ochoa (bass, vocals), Mark Speer (guitar, vocals) and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums, keyboards, piano, vocals). Formed in 2010, their band name, which means “plane” in Thai, reflects the diverse influences that shape their music.
The trio’s journey began when Speer and Johnson met in a church gospel band in 2004, which Ochoa later joined in 2007. Inspired by a shared love of Afghan music and Middle Eastern architecture, they began making music more seriously after touring together in 2010. The distinctive sound, characterized by a mix of global influences such as 1960s Thai music, Middle Eastern and Spanish sounds, is often described as soulful, psychedelic and dub-infused.
Khruangbin gained recognition with albums such as “The Universe Smiles Upon You” (2015), “Con Todo el Mundo” (2018) and “Mordechai” (2020). History of Khruangbin
Khruangbin’s history dates back to Houston, Texas, where guitarist Mark Speer and drummer DJ Johnson met in 2004 while playing in a church gospel band. In 2007, Laura Lee Ochoa joined them after being introduced by mutual friends. Ochoa and Speer, inspired by a shared love of Afghan music and Middle Eastern architecture, began making music together more seriously after touring with Yppah in 2010.
The band’s name, Khruangbin, which means “plane” in Thai, reflects their international influences. The trio developed their distinctive sound in a barn in Burton, Texas, which became the location for future recording sessions. Their debut EP, “History of Flight”, and their first studio album, “The Universe Smiles Upon You” (2015), were inspired by Thai music of the 1960s.
Later albums, such as “Con Todo el Mundo” (2018) and “Mordechai” (2020), showcased his various influences, including Spanish and Middle Eastern sounds. Khruangbin’s instrumental style, often described as Thai funk, defies easy categorization and encompasses soul, rock, dub and psychedelia.
The band’s visual style includes the distinctive black wigs worn by Ochoa and Speer during performances and interviews. His journey continues with collaborations, such as the 2022 album “Ali” with Vieux Farka Touré and the announcement of his 2024 album “A la Sala”, demonstrating Khruangbin’s continued exploration of global musical landscapes.
