Area of Interest Plot
In 1943, Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, was enjoying a seemingly idyllic life next to the camp with his wife Hedwig and their children. Despite the constant reminder of the suffering beyond his garden wall, Höss focuses on family outings and tending to the garden while the servants take care of household chores. Following his promotion to sub-inspector, Höss reluctantly leaves for Berlin, leaving a distraught Hedwig behind.
His mother, horrified by the proximity of the field, abruptly leaves. Meanwhile, a Polish girl secretly helps the prisoners by hiding food. Höss returns to Auschwitz to supervise a mass extermination operation, feeling numb to the horrors. After a party, he confesses to Hedwig her sinister thoughts. As he leaves his Berlin office, he retches, symbolizing his inner turmoil. The film ends with him descending into darkness, reflecting on his monstrous actions.
Zone of Interest Release Date
“The Hot Spot” premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 19 and received a standing ovation that lasted six minutes. It won the Grand Prix, the Cannes Soundtrack Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize. The North American debut was at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2023, followed by a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In the US, its release was delayed from December 8 and received a limited theatrical release on December 15, 2023. It will be released in the UK on February 2, 2024 and in Poland on February 9, 2024. 2024.
Where to observe the area of interest?
“The Zone of Interest” is currently showing exclusively in theaters and is not yet available for rental or purchase on on-demand platforms. However, viewers can anticipate its availability for streaming on Max, facilitated thanks to a collaboration between streaming platform Max and the film’s distributor, A24.
While the film remains limited to theatrical screenings for now, plans are afoot to make it accessible for streaming in the future.
