The plot of the fall of the House of Usher
A person receives a letter from his friend Roderick Usher, telling him that he is very sick and needs help. They go to Roderick’s house, which is falling apart. Roderick’s sister, Madeline, is also sick and sometimes appears dead. Roderick and Madeline are the last members of the family.
The visitor likes Roderick’s art and tries to cheer him up by reading and listening to his music. Roderick sings a song about a spooky place. He thinks the house is alive, as if he has feelings. He also believes that his destiny is tied to the house.
Roderick then says that Madeline has died. He is afraid that the doctors will study her body, so he wants her in a grave for two weeks before being buried. The visitor helps put Madeline in the grave and realizes that she and Roderick are twins. He also notices that Madeline looks a little rosy, which is strange after death. Both Roderick and the visitor become increasingly angry over the next week.
During a storm, Roderick gets scared and points to the glowing lake. It’s like in Roderick’s paintings, but there is no clear reason for it.
To calm Roderick, the visitor reads a story about a knight. The knight finds a shiny shield, but when he tries to take it, it falls and makes a loud noise. As the story progresses, strange sounds begin to be heard in the house.
