Waterloo Highway
Waterloo Road, a popular British television show, made a successful comeback with its eleventh season. It aired on BBC One in the United Kingdom from 3 January to 14 February 2023. The series revolves around the lives of the staff and students of Waterloo Road High School, a fictional school in Greater Manchester. It was co-produced by Wall to Wall and Rope Ladder Fiction and directed by executive producers Cameron Roach, Gaynor Holmes and Jo McClellan.
The decision to bring back Waterloo Road was influenced by the show’s high ratings when it was available as a box set on BBC iPlayer. The revival was announced in September 2021, generating excitement among fans. Around 130 people, including 50 actors and 80 production crew members, worked on the series, making it a collaborative effort.
Four actors returned to reprise their roles from the original series, connecting the two versions of the show. To support newcomers to television production, a six-month training program was established, resulting in the training of 20 people.
The series consisted of seven episodes, each one hour long. It explored several stories and tackled important issues facing schools, students and parents in post-pandemic Britain. The aim was to give visibility to underrepresented groups and shed light on issues such as ADHD, the UK cost of living crisis and bulimia nervosa.
