When it calls to the heart
“When Calls the Heart” is a television drama series set in the early 20th century. The story revolves around Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher from a wealthy family who lands her first job in a small coal mining town called Coal Valley in western Canada. She faces many challenges as she adjusts to a simpler life on the border, and the townspeople initially resist her presence.
The series delves into themes of love, loss, and resilience as it follows the lives and relationships of various characters in the city. Over the course of the show, Elizabeth’s interactions with RCMP officer Jack Thornton and businessman Lucas Bouchard create romantic tension and emotional development. The series also explores the struggles and triumphs of the town’s women who are widowed due to a mining accident.
Throughout its run, “When Calls the Heart” experienced cast changes, including the departure of Lori Loughlin’s character, Abigail Stanton, in Season 6 due to real-life controversies. The show has been well received by viewers for its heartwarming and inspiring stories. It originally began as a two-hour TV movie pilot before becoming a full-fledged series. “When Calls the Heart” continues to captivate its audience as it was renewed for an 11th season, promising to further explore the lives of the residents of Hope Valley.
When the plot of the heart calls
“When Calls the Heart” is set in the early 20th century and follows the story of Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher accustomed to a life of privilege. Her first teaching assignment takes her to Coal Valley, a small coal mining town in western Canada. Life in Coal Valley is much simpler and often full of challenges.
Elizabeth’s arrival into this close-knit community is initially not welcomed by everyone, especially NWRC Constable Jack Thornton. He believes that Elizabeth’s wealthy father has unfairly assigned him the task of protecting her from her. To thrive in this 1910s coal town, Elizabeth must learn the ways of the Canadian frontier.
Abigail Stanton, played by Lori Loughlin, is another central character. Her husband, the mine foreman, and her only child, along with 45 other miners, died in a mining accident due to irresponsible management. Abigail and the other widowed women face the challenge of working in the mine to support their families. Despite the difficulties, they remain steadfast and trust in their faith. The show explores her journey to cope with loss, find strength, and build a new life in the renowned town of Hope Valley.
The series also delves into Elizabeth’s romantic relationships with Jack Thornton and Lucas Bouchard. While Jack initially disliked Elizabeth, he eventually falls in love with her. Tragically, Jack “dies” off-screen in season 5. Elizabeth then meets businessman Lucas Bouchard and they form a close friendship. Their emotional connection eventually leads to a romantic relationship. The show explores the complexities of love, loss and a new beginning in a tight-knit community.
