Big Ten Network

Big Ten Network (BTN) is an American sports network based in Chicago, Illinois, whose primary goal is to provide comprehensive coverage of college sports sanctioned by the Big Ten Conference. This includes a wide range of content such as live and recorded event broadcasts, news, analysis programs and other features highlighting member schools within the conference. Established as a joint venture between Fox Sports and the Big Ten, the network operates with Fox Corporation holding a 61% majority stake and acting as operating partner, while the Big Ten Conference owns a 39% stake.

Distributed by most major television providers, Big Ten Network is widely accessible and, as of 2014, had approximately 60 million subscribers in the United States. The network’s subscriber base saw growth with the inclusion of Rutgers University and the University of Maryland in the Big Ten Conference. The network stands as the second sports network in the US dedicated to a single college sports conference, after MountainWest Sports Network. Since then, BTN has been a pioneer, paving the way for other conference-specific cable channels, such as those dedicated to the Pac-12, SEC and ACC, all of which offer a comparable variety of programming.

History of the Big Ten Network

The roots of the Big Ten Network (BTN) date back to 2004, when negotiations between the Big Ten and ESPN for a contract extension hit a roadblock. The conference sought to increase rights fees, prompting Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany to explore the possibility of creating a dedicated network. Announced on June 21, 2006, as a 20-year joint venture between the Big Ten Conference and Fox Entertainment Group, the network launched on August 30, 2007.

At its inception, the conference owned 51% of the network, positioning it as the first cable channel dedicated exclusively to a single collegiate conference. The network aimed for “event equality”, committing to produce and distribute an equal number of men’s and women’s events across all platforms within three years of launch.

Initially faced with limited carriage, the network expanded its reach to achieve coverage at cable providers’ “extended core” tiers in all Big Ten markets by the following year. In June 2010, Fox increased its stake to 51%, gaining majority control. In 2011, the network was renamed “BTN” and introduced the “BTN2Go” service for live streaming. BTN faced a dispute with Dish Network in 2012 but eventually reached an agreement to restore coverage.

In July 2017, Fox’s contract to run BTN was extended through 2032 as part of a broader deal that made Fox the primary television rights holder for regular-season Big Ten football games. The network underwent a change in ownership structure in 2019 when 21st Century Fox’s assets were sold to Disney, and BTN’s stake was spun off into the reduced Fox Corporation. The network marked the delayed 2020 football season with a new logo, returning to the use of “Big Ten Network” as its primary name.
