- Van Dyke began as a radio DJ at WDAN in Danville, Illinois, in the late 1940s.
- In 1947, he teamed up with pantomime actor Phil Erickson to form a comedy duo called “Eric and Van—the Merry Mutes.”
- They toured the West Coast, performing mime acts and lip-syncing to records, and eventually moved to Atlanta, Georgia, for a local television show called “The Merry Mutes.”
- He began working in television at WDSU-TV in New Orleans and later appeared on several network television shows.
- A friend at CBS recommended him, which led to him signing a seven-year contract with the network. He hosted the CBS Morning Show, co-hosted by Walter Cronkite.
- In November 1959, Van Dyke made her Broadway debut in “The Girls Against the Boys” at the Alvin Theatre.
