Cake
Cake is a rock band from Sacramento, California. They have five members: John McCrea, who sings; Vince DiFiore, who plays trumpet; Xan McCurdy, the guitarist; Daniel McCallum, the bassist; and Todd Roper, who plays drums. The band is known for the sarcastic lyrics and the unique voice of its singer. They combine different musical styles such as country, disco, rock, funk and hip-hop in their songs.
Cake began in 1991 with members John McCrea, Vince DiFiore, Greg Brown, Frank French and Shon Meckfessel. Gabe Nelson later replaced Meckfessel. They released their first album, “Motorcade of Generosity”, on their own before signing with Capricorn Records in 1995.
Their song “Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifestyle” became popular, peaking at number 35 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and appearing on MTV’s 120 Minutes. After some changes in the band’s lineup, they released their second album, “Fashion Nugget”, in 1996, which became a huge hit with the single “The Distance”. As they continued making music, they released more albums such as “Prolonging the Magic” in 1998 and “Comfort Eagle” in 2001, which had the popular song “Short Skirt/Long Jacket.”
In 2004, they released “Pressure Chief”, their last album with Columbia Records. They then started their own label called Upbeat Records and released “Showroom of Compassion” in 2011. This album did very well, debuting at the top of the Billboard charts. Since 2011, they haven’t released many new albums, but they still perform live and sometimes suggest that they might release new music in the future.
