Ashanti Douglas was born on October 13, 1980 in Glen Cove, New York, to Tina Douglas, an African-American former dance teacher, and Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas, an African-American former singer. She is the eldest of her parents’ children and has a younger sister named Kenashia “Shia” Douglas. Ashanti’s mother named her after the Ashanti Empire in Ghana, where women had power and influence and aspired for her to follow that model.
